In war-torn times, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and rescues a little girl, which brings an irreversible change to the couple’s life and to the lives of those whose paths the child will cross. This is Michel Hazanavicius' The first animated movie.. So far this is the best 2024 presentation I’ve seen this year and we’re in the middle of December 2024. It tells a story that takes place in Poland during World War II, almost like a popular fairy tale. Most of the action takes place in the forest typical of the aforementioned popular fairy tales, when a couple of lumberjacks turn up and adopt a Jewish girl who was thrown from a deportation train passing through their forest. His father threw him off him to save him from certain death in Auschwitz. I won’t go into the details of the plot so you can see them, I just want to add that the film comes to a deeply philosophical conclusion. From a technical point of view, everything is done perfectly. The visuals of the film are excellent. The drawing style is just right, not too rich in detail and not too rough, mostly showing poorly lit scenes with dominant shades of gray, highlighting the horrors of the most infamous war and mass destruction in the history of mankind. And then the soundtrack, which is sublime: The musical score, the sound effects, the narration and the dubbing (I saw the original version in French) are perfectly suited to present a gem of a film. In conclusion, this is one of the best films that deals with the subject of racism and especially the Shoah through its artistic process and the story it wants to tell.
