Chronology

Set in the 23rd century on Mars, the plot follows the investigation of a murder case by a pair of private detective Alina Ruby and her android sidekick Carlos Rivera. He had already directed episodes of the TV show Lastman (2016). In 2018, producer Didier Creste contacted him and Laurent Sarfati, creator and writer of Lastman, to work on a film adaptation of their series.

I wasn’t prepared for the attention to detail and plot in this adult sci-fi animated thriller. The three laws of robotics that are included in Asimov’s Robot series of novels were even used by writers to explain how robots behave and interact with humans. Let’s start with the exquisite animation style, which is incredibly colorful, fluid and detailed.

I thought Carlos was one of the best written and best developed characters

A lot of attention is paid to the creation of the futuristic environment, down to the smallest elements that give the film realism. But everything happens very quickly, and several important personalities or events are only glossed over. 'Mars Express' It needed a bit more screen time to develop these elements better, but the Cannes Film Festival official seller doesn’t usually like overlong animations, and this was one of those films in 2023!

Overall, it was a great animated film to enjoy
